You’ve probs heard of the glass-skin trend that originated in Korea (i.e. the phenomenon where skin is so smooth, radiant, and poreless that it looks like a pane of glass). The current obsession there for achieving this look is the Medicube Age-R Booster Pro, a skincare device that does the work of six different tools in one. And not only is it the number-one selling device in South Korea rn, but it's loved by celebs like Hailey Bieber.
Per the brand's clinical studies, in just a five-minute daily treatment, the device is thought to increase product absorption by a whopping 785 percent. Wild, right? Since I already use and love a host of skincare tools (microcurrent, LED face masks, red light devices for hair growth, etc.), I had to see if this one could actually replace a few of 'em. I put my trusty devices in storage and exclusively used the Age-R Booster Pro for three weeks. Keep scrolling for my ~very official~ review and to learn everything you need to know about this skin-enhancing gadget.
What is the Medicube Age-R Booster Pro?
The Medicube Age-R Booster Pro is a multi-tasking tool built with six functions: Electroporation to increase product efficacy and absorption, microcurrent to firm, EMS (electric muscle stimulation) to sculpt your face, LED light therapy to help increase collagen production, sonic vibration to relax and soothe, and electric needles to boost elasticity and even skin texture and tone. Within each of these functions are four modes to choose from: booster, microcurrent, derma-shot, and air shot. Each setting is automated with a corresponding vibration pattern and LED color—orange, green, red, and blue, respectively—to enhance the modality’s impact. TBH, there’s not much this device can’t do.
What exactly does each mode do, though? The booster mode utilizes electroporation, which allows your skincare products to penetrate deeper into your skin for amplified results and enhanced radiance. The microcurrent mode is like a workout for your face. By using small electrical pulses, this setting stimulates facial muscles to lift and "tone," helping to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles. The derma-shot mode is similar to microcurrent, except a bit stronger. It uses different types of electrical pulses that are designed to directly improve skin laxity and boost firmness to help snatch your jawline, cheekbones, etc. Finally, the air shot mode exfoliates and refines skin by sending out tiny electrical signals that create micro holes in pores. This can potentially help clear out pores (making them appear a lil tighter and smoother) and jumpstart collagen production for better skin elasticity.
How to use the Medicube Age-R Booster Pro:
With all of these settings and modes, the device sounds somewhat complicated to use, but it's surprisingly simple to get the hang of. The power button turns on the device (duh), while the "mode" button below it allows you to toggle through the four settings. Once you select your treatment, you can click the power button again to pick a vibration level between one and five (one = the most mild, five = the most intense).
It’s recommended that you apply some sort of face serum or moisturizer (any will do!) before using the booster, microcurrent, and derma-shot settings for the tool to glide smoothly across your face. (Plus, the booster mode is literally made to enhance the absorption of products, so make sure to layer on your formulas.) When it comes to the air-shot mode, though, that should be completed on a freshly cleaned, bare face two to three times a week.
The beauty of this gadget is that you don’t have to use each setting every single day to see results. You can curate your own unique routine based on your needs. If you're not sure what you’d benefit from most, the Age-R Booster app will guide you to create a schedule to help you reach your goals.
Now that you understand what it is and how it works, lemme take you through my full review. Spoiler: I'm actually so obsessed, I fear.
My experience:
To get the most out of the Age-R Booster Pro, I decided to let the app decide my skin’s fate and let it create the best routine for my needs. I downloaded the app, answered a few questions, then connected my device via Bluetooth and was given a weekly plan to follow. My regimen suggested I use booster mode daily, microcurrent and derma-shot mode three times a week, and air-shot twice a week.
There’s no specific recommendation on when to complete your treatments, so long as you stay consistent. So you can use it morning, night, or even midday, depending on what works with your schedule. I prefer to use this tool in the morning because it works like a ~shot of espresso~ to energize my skin, but do your thing.
I always start with the booster mode after applying my go-to hydrating serum (shoutout to Summer Fridays Jet Lag Deep Hydration Serum). As someone who regularly uses microcurrent and other muscle-stimulating technologies in my routine, I knew my skin was already well-adjusted to the pulsating sensation and vibrations, which made me comfortable to bypass both level one and level two and instead complete the booster treatment on level three. (If you’ve never used any sort of skin tech, be sure to start at level one and work your way up.) I noticed a difference after the very first use. My skin was so plump and comparable to a glowing, dewy dumpling. As for my pores? Um, what pores? Can’t see ‘em. It was literally like I just came from a high-end facial. 'Twas that dramatic.
I also opted to complete the microcurrent mode on level three (again, because my skin was already accustomed to the sensation). This setting might be my favorite because of the lifted results. I spend extra time slowly swiping the tool along my jawline and cheekbones for a chiseled effect. I may not have the most naturally defined facial features, but after completing a microcurrent session my face was Bella Hadid-level snatched.
Following the microcurrent mode with the derma-shot literally gives me supermodel-worthy definition. (Just look at the difference when I used the tool on only one side of my face. Crazy, right?!) Be warned: The derma-shot mode is more intense than both the booster and microcurrent, so even though my skin is well-acclimated to the tingly feeling, I elected to complete this mode on level two throughout my test.
The air-shot mode was a bit jarring to use at first, tbh. The little electrical shots aren’t painful, but they aren’t necessarily comfortable either. Word of advice: Definitely stick to level one when using this setting. The feeling reminded me of the high-frequency wand my facialist uses to zap acne. I’ve been dealing with some seriously annoying hormonal breakouts, and focusing on those struggle spots helped to decrease inflammation and shorten the lifespan of the zits. Now when I feel a pimple brewing, I immediately blast it with the air-shot mode to stop it in its tracks. Plus, this setting is boosted with blue LED which also can help potentially kill some acne-causing bacteria (a genius combo if you ask me).
Pros:
Regardless of which mode I was using, gliding the slim wand along my face always felt like a mini spa treatment, even though my surroundings were less than glamorous—I literally sat on my toilet through every session. One thing I instantly noticed (and loved) about the Age-R Booster is how it talked to me. Yup, the device actually speaks to you while you're using it (in a posh, lovely, ASMR-y voice, might I add) to tell you how much time has passed, so you know how far along you are in the five-minute treatment.
The sessions go by even faster when you’re scrolling on TikTok, which is super easy to do since the tool can be used with one hand. I’m not a huge fan of doing that (unless I’m in a brain rot mood) because I like to practice presence during my skincare routine so I can fully enjoy the facial massage. You decide what’s best for you, but I always recommend creating a mindfulness practice, and the five minutes it takes to complete an Age R Booster treatment is the perfect way to start.
FYI, you do have to charge the device. But it's super long-lasting. It still has a near full-charge, and I’ve used it daily for three weeks.
Cons:
I really had to think long and hard about any downsides to this device (can you tell I'm now its biggest fan?), but my one complaint is the button placements. It’s easy to accidentally press the "mode" button mid-treatment which will make you lose your progress and reset the treatment. Otherwise, I really can’t think of any drawbacks.
Final Verdict:
The Age-R Booster Pro hype is very very real, per my rigorous testing. It’s certainly an investment, but at the same time, $228 is a total steal IMO, because it does the work of six different devices. (And realistically, a lot of the single-feature skincare tools available cost more than this multitasker.)
I’m so impressed by the striking results I experienced (literally from the first use, mind you) and feel like continued consistency will give me glass—scratch that—diamond skin. In fact, I adore this so much that I plan on retiring some of my other skin tools. It feels pretty damn close to a lot of the in-office professional treatments I've tried, right from the comfort of my tiny lil bathroom.
