Daisuke Igarashi (Japanese: 五十嵐 大介, Igarashi Daisuke) is a critically acclaimed Japanese cartoonist. He is known for his refined art style and philosophical themes.
Igarashi began his professional career in 1993 on the pages of the magazine 'Monthly Afternoon'. Therein, he published the stories composing the series Hanashippanashi (1993-1996), a few other shorts collected in the volume Sora Tobi Tamashii (2002), as well as his first minor success, the series Little Forest (2003-2005).
In 2003 Igarashi started a fruitful collaboration with the alternative manga magazine 'Monthly Ikki', in which he serialised his most famous works to date: the anthological Witches (2003-2004) and Children of the Sea (2006-2011). Both series were awarded an Excellence Prize at the Japan Media Arts Festival, respectively in 2004 and 2009.

The daily life of a cat and its owner in a series of daily events. Well respected in critical circles, Daisuke Igarashi managed to turn such a simple premise into a simple work of art. Was it the picture of the Japanese spirit that meets the sublime in everyday life? This is Kabocha No Bōken, a perfect story for cat lovers and for those who enjoy any good work. Art is sketchy and varies a lot. At the best it's very detailed and splendid made but on the other side of the scale it can be really like kid’s doodles... though with skill. He is an artist for whom I cherish a sincere appreciation for the quality of his work. Although he does not have great commercial recognition, even though he already has some of his leftovers released in English, his work is recognized by specialized critics. And after reading, it made me want to have a cat too, just like Kabocha.

Daisuke Igarashi is always so good at drawing nature! It’s really a joy to see the scenes he draws of plants poking out of the snow, and Kabocha and the other animal’s movements are so life-like. Really admirable. It’s been a long time since I read one of his stories, or at least it feels that way… sometimes I think some of his longer works get slightly… preachy, or something? Murky? I’m not really sure how to describe what I’m thinking of (with the whale story in particular) but in any case, what I want to say is that with a short story like this one, slice of life, with only two main characters, his work really shines. Bravo!

A sweet simple diary-entry-like story of the artist’s experience living with his cat in the woods. I really enjoyed seeing his studio space. Half of the pages are done with watercolor or ink wash and the others are done with very scratchy line-work and minimal halftone. I didn’t know anything about Igarashi before reading this, and I was really impressed with his work when I looked him up. I’d love to get the artbook that catalogues his vast repetoire.

This is such a cute manga by someone who clearly loves their cat!
The watercolor pages are so beautiful, and I love reading about Kabocha doing, well, regular cat things. The accuracy of the art is great.
Mostly, though, I just love reading cat hijinks.

A very cute story, loved the few watercolor art style chapters, it gives the whole story a different vibe. Kind of wish all of it was that way. Whenever I read manga about cats it gives me a sense of not being alone in the world. Like a little - heh I guess everyone experiences this.
